FREE, 40-Page, E-Book: "How To Solo With Pentatonic Scales"

Hey folks,

When I sent out my "What do you want to learn?" letter last month, I got soooooo many questions about scales. And because Pentatonic scales are probably the most popular (and the easiest to learn to use quickly) I thought I would just GIVE all my subscribers a copy of my book.

Keep in mind taht this is just 1 of 10 books that come with my guitar-course (not to mention the 4-hours of video, 3.5 hours of video-tutorials and the well over 100 audio files of real guitar examples).

Anyway, there are only two conditions for downloading the book:

  1. You must promise to actually use it!
  2. Please take a minute to give me your honest feedback here on the blog about the book. (Just scroll down and click the "comments" link below.)
If you find it helpful, then say so. If you don't, I want to know why. And if you find a mistake, show me. (Actually there is at least 1 error that I know of already... can you find it?)

Now, some "gurus" wouldn't admit they have errors in their books. But I feel like it's better to let you know up-front that I'm not perfect (not even close). At least that way you know that I'm human, too!

Instructions for downloading the book:

Right-click on the blue-link below and choose "Save Target As..." to save a copy of the book to your hard drive. (Choose "Save Link As..." if your using FireFox).

How To Solo With Pentatonic Scales

You must have Adobe 7.0 or higher to open the book. You can download it free here.

All the best... and don't forget to leave your comments!

P.S. A lot of people have been asking about the new course coming out June 1, 2006. They want to konw what's new, what's different, what's the cost, etc. But there are still many things that have to be worked out before I can give out those details.

So, I've set up an easy way for people to make sure they don't miss out. You can become one of my "insiders" and you'll get priority-notification when I release the details about the new course. There is no cost to become an "insider" and you're guaranteed to get "first-notice" about all the details (including the special bonuses available during the first week of June).

  • Hey guys (and gals) I just wanted to say, "Thanks!" to everybody for writing me last month.

I couldn't believe I had 680 replies to my letter! There were some great questions and I hope I can answer the majority of them in my new course AND in future newsletters over the next few weeks.

Thanks again and I look forward to reading your comments!

  • I have been playing gutar for about a year. And I've never taken lessons in my whole life. But I didn't find your book to be helpful at all. I already knew all of this stuff. You can find it on the internet if you know where to look. I know all the scales and understand how it all works. My problem is that I suck at soloing.

    I'm sorry.

  • Hi Dan. Thanks for the ebook on scales. I'm 71 years young and a pensioner and into playing and singing country stuff. My wife (plays simple Bass Guitar) and I, do a bit of entertaining in Country music clubs around the area and in Nursing homes where people cannot get out and about. I've only ever been into open chord stuff, but would love to be able to do a bit of soloing such as lead breaks etc. My main problem is my fingers just don't seem to go where I want them to. Hope I can pick up a few tips from this download which has only just completed. Once again a big thank you. Best wishes. Jim Lee. Australia.

  • Dear Dan,

Thanks a lot for the e-book as I am sure it will help me in learning about scales and soloing techniques. The other thing I wanted to learn about is the "Caged System" which I have heard of, but have no idea about. I am a 31 yo male, and play the guitar as a hobby but would love to be able to perform. It was a childhood dream to play guitar and being a lefty I had a lot of trouble in finding a left handed guitar in India. I have recently imported a Kramer "striker" guitar and have now started practising and playing on it. it has two dual rail pick ups, one quadrail pick up (all humbuckers), with a floyd rose locking tremolo and a two tap tone switch with 5 way selecter. I am between jobs at the moment and thus unable to purchase your course. I am sure I will take it as soon as I have a new job. Thanks for helping out.

I did want go ahead and let me "blogger friends" know this in advance...

I just finished making some new recordings -- jam tracks -- to go along with the book. That way, I can be your rhythm guitarist while you solo!

I'm going to send out link (via email) later today to download those.

    Keep your eyes open!

  • Hey Michael Dorfman,

    I just read your comment...

    "priority nonfiction"

    LOL!

Well, ok now I know of at least two mistakes in the book.

Actually, it should say, "priority notification."

That's my "insiders" group (people who want to make double sure they get all the details about the new course coming out June 1).

Anyway, here's the link if you want to join that group:

  • I just now downloaded the book and took a look at the Pentatonic Major scale. I could be wrong, but there seems to be a mistake in the Tab for the C scale on page 5. You have the F natural tabbed as the 4th fret of the D string. Shouldn't that be the 3rd fret?

I'll keep reading, I think this is a valuabe reference and I thank you for making it freely available.

I am 80 years of age, and getting back to the guitar, which I loved when I first started playing at 55, playing a Gibson Birdland in competition with the younger set, that was fun, and here I am learning it all over again. Many thanks for your help. My fingers work okay, thanks to many years of making dolls, as I am a doll artisan.

  • Comment on downloading the Pentatonic ---

Thankyou for keeping it simple / straight. So many authors forget the level of training/experience etc. they are targeting and make it so overblown that the people they are trying to reach
get lost after the first page. Thanks for remembering the student's mind and writing simple clear and straight forward!!

  • This book is good for an absolute beginner to the pentatonic scales and soloing, otherwise the information is pretty obvious. I'm sorry but I have to say that I didn't really find much of the information useful to me, although that may be because I have been playing for many years.

By Anonymous, at May 24, 2006

  • I am a beginner! Dan, thank you so much for this piece of information!!

By Anonymous, at May 24, 2006

  • I think you might want to go over your book thing, because um... since when is there an F# in the C Major scale? but yeah, I don't think many beginners are able to read the music and so they'll be playing it wrong if they follow the tab.

    :~)
    Keep smiling,

  • Hi Dan, thank you so much for this guide. I have been playing for less than a year and now I am playing my favourite solos. The guide explains the scales very well and its so easy to follow.

  • hi dan,
the ebook is really helpful and is an easier way into the theory which lots avoid as it is too complicated.
Thanks for making playing a little easier to understand !

  • The book that i downloaded from the internet is a very clearly formatted document. It explains the theoretical side of the scales in a clear simple to understand way and presents the different scale shapes clearly also. A begginer guitarist would definately benefit from the knowledge of the scales expressed within the book.

You gave a total of 9 chord proggressions to solo over and their appropriate scale. I think a student using your book would benefit from an accompanying CD so there is less trouble involved with using this information. I also believe you might have improved the book with a couple of examples of solos tab-ed out.

Also the repeated Where the Rubber meets the Road pages didn't really need to be included although they did divide the book into sections- repeating the same information could seem a little tacky.

I believe the book teaches the scale theory and positions well but should include more musical examples and play along examples.

However, my response should not be interpreted as a negative one! this book really does de-mystify the world of pentatonic scales and put it into some context. You have done a great job of communicating the material within the book and i am very impressed. The suggestions above are purely through a want to be helpful and encouraging.

  • thanks dan for such a book.i was looking for such information.thanks again

  • Really cool thing you're doing here, really great thing for guitar too. Most books cost on this cost 10+.I already knew the pentatonic scales but wanted to see if you had any tips.I found your mistake too,it had to do with the blues scales. In one section, you left out the 2nd flatted fifth in the scale and in another you included these "blue notes" in a scale which you said was a pentatonic(I know that it's a variation, but wanted to let u kno).Overall I was really pleased with your FREE lesson. Please continue to put out more of these

By Anonymous, at May 29, 2006

  • Daniappreciate you having a book that don't cost anything but it didn't help me because i don't know what some of the things mean like the chords on how to play it i have no clue what a and all of that

  • Dan, thank you so much for the free E-book. At first I was a little skeptical about signing up for it because, well, we all know that the internet is full of scammers and cheaters. However I'm glad I took the plunge because as promised the book was 100% free and I received it almost instantly. Glancing through it for the first time, there is a ton of material here that I know will raise my playing ability for the better. Thanks for putting out this free lesson, knowledge like this should be shared with everyone for no price! Thanks again, I'm gonna go play now!

  • hmm if u ask for an honest comment i think that there wasnt enough showing you quite how to make the solos like all the techniques i mean i know how to bend, slide etc. but i think that there needs to be more on where exactly you put it. But for the pentatonic scales which a friend of mine told me to check out if i wanted to write good riffs i thouht that the book wasnt to bad!

  • Thanks Dan. I've wanted to learn guitar forever, and I'm trying to get as much info as I can. I'm sure I will get great use out of it.

Thanks for the Pentatonic E book.
    Looks good.
But why do you place your fretboard images(Movable patterns) sideways?
I thought I was seeing things.
    Thanks

  • A great service to absolute beginers, but a few ideas such as 'major pentatonic off the flat 7 of a dominant chord' and 'up a 5th, and up a 5th again' ( eg. bmin and f# min,&/or blues scales over e minor chord) would be helpful to someone progresing a bit.
I gues that comes in your follow up books though.
    Cheers Steve.

  • I just downloaded your e-book.I will be 48 in aug.i know nothing and just started to learn how to play.Your e-book is helping me with my fingering along with learning pentatonic scales.I now know a little more and having fun.I know some day i will be able to play something.Thank You for your help. • HI DAN,
GLAD YOUR E-BOOK INCLUDES STANDARD NOTATION.
AS I USE 4 STRINGS FOR GUITAR AND 3 STRINGS FOR BASS IN NON-STANDARD TUNING ON MY 7-STRING, TAB IS USELESS FOR ME UNTIL I HAVE TIME TO TRANSPOSE IT.
FORMS ARE EASIER AND LESS TIME CONSUMING TO TRANSPOSE.
I WILL DEFINITELY WORK THIS MATERIAL INTO MY PRACTICE SCHEDUAL.
    THANKS, J.REX
